Worth the Wait
I've heard that most women who are having a scheduled c-section spend the night before tossing and turning and unable to get any quality sleep whatsoever. That wasn't quite the case for me. I was so determined to get a good night's sleep before Canaan's arrival on Monday that I even overslept! So, while we planned on having a nice, slow, unchaotic morning easing casually into the climactic birth of our son, instead we got the rushed, ready-or-not-here-we-go chaos usually associated with spontaneous labor instead of planned c-sections.
Despite the late start, we got to the hospital around 9 a.m. and the nurses didn't waste any time getting me ready for surgery. I was on the monitor and hooked up to an IV within minutes (after three tries with the needle, by the way - ouch!), and they even said the surgery might be moved up a little. "Does up mean sooner??" I asked, and when I realized that it did, that's when the nerves set in. I was suddenly quite aware of the fact that I was about to go under the knife, and I did not like it one bit. With Gideon's birth, I had a whole day of pain-killing drugs in my system which kept me from being 100% aware of everything. This time, however, I was aware of everything! Needless to say, I told the anesthesiologist as he struggled to get the needle in my back for my spinal that he was free to just put me under completely.
However, the surgery got underway, I squeezed Jason's hand on one side and some random nurse's hand on the other, and just when I thought I couldn't take anymore, I heard the most amazing sound...

Canaan Anthony Ryan was born on 1/12/09 at 11:22 a.m. He was 6 lbs, 6 oz, and 19 inches long. As of now, his eyes are dark blue (we think - he doesn't keep them open very long!), and his hair is dark brown, just slightly darker than Gideon's was when he was born. Obviously, I fell in love at first sight! (Okay, beforehand, but it was still awesome to finally see the object of my affection!)

As they weighed, measured, and washed our sweet little boy, big brother didn't take his eyes off him.

All ready to come home from the hospital

Gideon was happy to have us all under one roof again!

There you have our first few wonderful days with our little boy. I would love to ramble on with more details, but it's taken me this long to post, so I won't push my luck. I think I hear whimpering coming from the other room anyway, so I'm probably on borrowed time. But, just know that our prayers were answered. Everyone was healthy and safe during delivery, and we have been once again blessed with a perfect little boy. We are so thankful!! We are doing fine at home now, but it will take awhile before I fully recover from the surgery. Until then, I'm just taking it easy, enjoying my house full of men and thanking God for his little miracles!

What a cute cute family! I can't wait to meet Canaan...I would have been in touch sooner to come and see him but the boys have had colds. So, as soon as I know everyone is well here, I'll give you a call! Love to you all!

Glad to see pictures up. Brooke asks everyday, "Turn on the computer, I want to see Baby Canaan." In case you didn't know, Brooke told me to tell you that when he is crying he is calling, "Aunt EMily". Glad you are home and doing well.

it's amazing how tiny they look in those car seats on the ride home from the hospital and how quickly they fill them! He is precious! Keep the photos coming! Hope you are feeling better soon...
