Adventures in the O.R.

Yesterday began early. Gideon was scheduled to have his first little surgery to have tubes put in his ears, and we had to be at the surgery center by 6:30 am. After skipping breakfast and rushing around like crazy because Jason and I overslept, I went upstairs to get Gideon thinking I'd have to talk slowly and softly while rubbing his little back in order to gently coax him out of his peaceful sleep. "Gideon, honey, it's time to wake up," I said in my most motherly voice. He immediately jumped up, stumbled to the edge of the crib, and wasted no time in letting me know of his first pre-surgery wish. "Boops! Boops!" [Translation - "It's six a.m. and I want to wear my cowboy Boots! Boots! with my pajamas!"] Why not? So we changed his clothes, put on the boots, and were on our way.

Of course, in walking to the car, we had to pass the mound of mulch we had delivered on Thursday, and apparently, Gideon thought we'd just woken him up in order to play in the dirt before the sun came up. "Dirt! Dirt!" was the second request of the morning. Surgery or no surgery, he didn't win that one.

We got to the hospital, and they had a great little pediatric waiting room that Gideon thoroughly enjoyed. Notice how his medical ID anklet matches so well with his "boops."

Later, the anesthesiologist came in and was super nice. He even gave Gideon a mask to play with so he wouldn't be scared later when they put one on him to put him to sleep. Apparently, this one was bubble gum flavored, and Gideon had no problems figuring out what it was for!

Finally, they rolled him to surgery in the Little Red Wagon Express and even let him keep his Pow and his Boops with him. Along the way, we stopped so he could pick out a stuffed animal (frog) and some stickers (Fish and Veggie Tales)! By the time we had to say goodbye, he was so enthralled by his wagon full of goodies, he never even realized we weren't there.

The surgery only took about ten minutes, and before long, our little boy was waking up, eating crackers, and pointing to all of the oxygen machines insisting they were vacuums.

The nurses said he was a model patient. He didn't even get fussy when the anesthesia was wearing off. So, we were out of the hospital by 8:30, and seeing as how we all skipped breakfast, we went to Denny's for breakfast and celebrated the success of our little boy's first (and hopefully only) surgery with pancakes!

Now, hopefully, this will be the end of his monthly earaches! Thanks for your prayers!

  • It's so nice that they do so much to try and make a scary experience fun! Saying a prayer that this marks the end of earaches!

  • I remember when Alexa had her tubes put in...definitely more traumatic for the parents than the child...
