Gideon's Pow

I've read that most children develop an attachment to a special stuffed animal, blanket, or something or another, so I've wondered if Gideon would too over time. I remember having a special blanket that I loved because I could pick at it long enough that it would start to unravel, and I loved unraveling it! My brother had his "soft" which started off as one of Mom's slips that he'd steal from her laundry basket, and transitioned into a blanket she made for him to keep her unmentionables in the laundry where they belong! And my sister had her "corn" which was really just the corner of a pillow case that she would rub with her fingers, but rumor has it, she still sleeps with her "corn" to this day!

And now, it looks like Gideon has his first attachment item. Over the past month or so, he has developed a frighteningly strong dependence on his VeggieTale pillow that his "Aunt" Jennifer made for him. He calls it his "Pow," which is really just his version of "pillow." But, it must go everywhere with him now! Today is laundry day, and I had to develop a whole strategic master plan in order to get the thing in the wash! Thankfully, he forgets about it when it is out of sight, but so far, here are the strange moments I've captured of Gideon and his Pow...

On the floor with the Pow because apparently they needed a moment together right there in the middle of the hall:

Gideon carrying the Pow over his shoulder like Santa Claus:

Carrying the Pow in his mouth because he needs both hands to play but is not yet ready to say goodbye:

Eating breakfast with the Pow because he woke up and wouldn't come downstairs until the Pow came with him:

I'll admit, it's kind of cute! I even caught him giving the Pow a kiss this morning. And, if I could just keep the thing clean, I wouldn't mind at all!

Did you have a special snuggly when you were young? Do your kids have something now? Add a comment and share; I'd love to hear about everyone else's "pow"s!

  • oh yes, i too had a pillowcase corner that i loved. in fact it is nicely placed in the back of one of my drawers.
as for the kids, they each have a bosch. henry's bosch consists of two very tattered gymboree blankets that are in pieces. for the first time in 6 years he left it at home when we traveled to texas after christmas. it was bitter sweet. as for the girls- they both have the female version which is known as a "boschie". these are simple tag blankets that friends made for them when they were born. i learned to have several on hand so that we could attempt to keep them clean. i'll just say that they are permanently different shades of grey instead of their original fun colors.

  • Em,
We cannot leave the house without the green blanket. Cooper has had it since he was about three months old, and it has been with him ever since. We finally had to go buy another one so we could always keep one on reserve in case I needed to wash the current one. And I was terrified they might stop selling that particular one. You might have to get "Aunt" Jennifer to make you another one. It makes keeping up with "pows" so much easier! Sometimes we call Cooper, Linus, because he is always walking around the house dragging the green blanket behind him. It is too cute!
    Love ya.
